In October 2019, Northern Bridge Consortium was honoured to collaborate on an interdisciplinary residential programme with the British Institute at Ankara, Turkey. The British Institute at Ankara supports, enables and encourages research in Turkey and the Black Sea region in a wide range of fields including archaeology, ancient and modern history, heritage management, social sciences and contemporary issues in public policy and political sciences. https://biaa.ac.uk

Sixteen Northern Bridge students, the director Dr Fionnghuala Sweeney, one of our alumni, Dr Jake Campbell-Morris and a colleague in Newcastle University’s Archaeology department, Dr Mark Jackson were treated to a wonderful programme of events, trip and of course, amazing food and baking. Sessions covered everything from Roman Ankara to the modern cityscape and culture; international links through poetry, opium and historical archaeology up to cutting edge scientific techniques and what they can tell us about both the deep and more recent past.

We hope this will just be the start of a rich and innovative international partnership between Northern Bridge Consortium and the British Institute at Ankara.
