Patrick Macfarlane

My thesis aims to provide the first overall theorisation of labour in Yeats’s poetry. It analyses the types of labour that his poems identify, and the various terms for labour that they use, as well as their approach to the meaning and effects of these labours. It examines the poems’ preoccupation with form and with poetry as craft. It asks both how the labour they depict relates to the labour done in creating, publicising and reading them, and what they have to say about the ‘work ethic’.
