Michael Bridgewater

Michael is a musician working in studio-based composition, live electronic performance, and improvisation. He is also a PhD candidate carrying out research within the field of hip hop studies. His principal interests include the history of underground music and music technology, analysis of contemporary music using strategies that eschew the transcription of metrically-ordered pitch and time, DJing as an exploratory critical practice, and composition using sounds derived from 8-bit and 16-bit video games systems. His doctoral research investigates the manner in which styles of hip hop beatmaking have evolved and proliferated through hip hop culture’s complex, dialectical relationship with the culture industry and the emergence of distinct region-specific strains of hip hop music.
