I am examining how farm animal welfare is and can be affected by real-world economic institutions and the discipline of welfare economics, and whether economic theory and market forces are capable or appropriate institutions with which to bring about improvements in farm animal welfare. This involves looking at economic ideals, real-world issues such as market failure and how public policy can be used to improve the lives of farm animals by making markets more reflective of consumer preferences for greater levels of welfare.
